Moving into October, the temperature eases up, the light casts longer shadows, and the scenery comes alive with a delightful kaleidoscope of changing colors.  Autumn steals our hearts with warm hues, cool breezes, and spicy sweet scents of cinnamon.  Pumpkins, apples, and crisp air beckon young and old outdoors.  There’s so much to do around Sacramento in Autumn.  There’s the tried and true and then there’s maybe something you might not have tried before!

All Things Apples

Moving into October, the temperature eases up, the light casts longer shadows, and the scenery comes alive with a delightful kaleidoscope of changing colors.  Autumn steals our hearts with warm hues, cool breezes, and spicy sweet scents of cinnamon.  Pumpkins, apples, and crisp air beckon young and old outdoors.  There’s so much to do around Sacramento in Autumn.  There’s the tried and true and then there’s maybe something you might not have tried before!

A perennial favorite of our region tops the list with all things Apples.  Yes, Apple Hill in Camino, Ca just up Highway 50 just past Placerville.  There, you can drive around in the scenic foothills with the Fall color just starting to come out.   Park amongst the orchards and find large apple bins containing an amazing variety of apples at the roadside fruit farms.  Don’t miss out on an array of toothy delights –  gooey caramel apples or warm-from-the-oven chewy and crisp apple fritters.

There’s cider and pies, wine and there’s wide open spaces for kids young and old to run around.  Apple Hill has been delighting people in the Sacramento region who make the trek up “the hill” for over 60 years!  They have a lot more orchards and lots more to do than when they first started.  It gets busy on the weekends so try going during the weekdays when it’s a little less crazy. A fun parent activity is to be a chaperone when a school takes a field trip there because then you might get a sneak peek behind the scenes at cider making!

Where’s a good pumpkin patch?

I confess that Autumn colors delight me and kicking off the season, there’s nothing better than a large orange pumpkin!  Pumpkin patches abound – some are smaller, family parcels with petting farms and hay rides and others are much bigger affairs such as Bishop’s in Wheatland.  Where do you go?  Here’s a list of some good local ones – the updated list for 2017!
